What if taking back your country from the grip of Communism and tyranny could be accomplished without raising a fist or shedding blood? What if you could reclaim your heritage by singing the songs of your nation?
Powerful, chilling, beautiful and inspiring, “The Singing Revolution” contains an impassioned message of hope and promise, even during the hardest of times. Some of the more difficult and graphic content of the film would suggest it is best suited to a more mature audience of teenagers and older.

Amazing film about the power of music to help restore freedom to a people oppressed by the Nazi's and the Soviet Union. Amazing story, well documented. It will bring tears to your eyes.
This is the story of how the country of Estonia freed itself from the Soviet Union, and accidently brought down the USSR in the process. There is a lot Americans wishing for less government and more liberty can learn from this documentary. Estonians, during 50 years of Soviet rule, treasured their traditions, particularly singing. Much as the singing of the Star-Spangled Banner before the Superbowl and other sporting events is the only glimpse most Americans ever have of our founding period, so traditional songs served as a springboard for Estonian independence. It may feel better to stand up and shout that the state is repressive and evil (i.e. talk radio), but Estonians didn't have that option under Soviet rule. However, after Gorbachev's Glasnost policy, they were allowed to form associations to discuss history and culture. Mart Laar, an historian and later free Estonia's first Prime Minister, was a founding member of the Estonian Heritage Society. In discussing and documenting Estonia's earlier War of Independence, the Society helped lay the groundwork for a new independence. Many innovative ideas and heroic acts are chronicled, as well as the role singing played in saving Estonia from the Soviets. Estonian songs battled with Soviet songs in a strange way, for the minds of the young. A key project of the freedom activists was a voluntary registration, where people signed up to be a citizen of the Estonian Republic. Imagine today if some U.S. Heritage Society decided to circulate the Declaration of Independence and Constitution for all Americans to sign. Asking only that they read these documents first...
